Internal Elastic Lamina in Regulating the Entry of Maacromolecules Into Arteries In Vivo

چکیده
A role for the internal elastic lamina (IEL), which separates the intima and media of an artery wall, as a restrictive barrier to macromolecular movement has been suggested in atherosclerotic lesion development or restenosis during angioplasty. The permeability coefficient of the IEL, however, has never been quantified in unperturbed vessels in vivo. Using a newly developed technique, we measured the concentration distributions in both intima and media of cationic (pl -z8.5) and anionic (pl -6.3) isozymes of the 44-kD macromolecule horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Two mathematical models of arterial wall transport differing in their resolution of the intima were required to simulate the concentration distribution data and to estimate the parameters of interest. Optimal estimates of the permeability coefficients of the endothelium (PE) and IEL (PIEL) to HRP were determined by the best least-squares fit of the two models to experimental data. These estimates (anionic:

Study of the elastic skeleton of intracranial arteries in animal and human vessels by scanning electron microscopy.
We studied the elastic skeleton of major cerebral arteries in rats, monkeys, and one human using scanning electron microscopy after hot formic acid extraction followed by freeze-drying. For comparison, we also examined the thoracic aorta and femoral artery of rats. The cerebral arteries of rats had one distinct internal elastic lamina connected to the thin adventitia with sponge-like medial ela...
متن کاملI-6: Remodelling Uterine Spiral Arteries inPregnancy
Background: During the first trimester of pregnancy the uterine spiral arteries that supply blood to the placenta are remodelled, creating heavily dilated conduits lacking maternal vasomotor control. To effect permanent vasodilatation, the internal elastic lamina and medial elastic fibres must be degraded. Failure of remodelling is a key characteristic of the pathological placenta and is though...
متن کاملMorphologic change of the internal elastic lamina in Buerger's disease.
Morphologic features and pathogenesis of arterial changes occurring in Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans) are still controversial. This study describes histopathologic features of medium sized arteries from patients with Buerger's disease, particularly of the internal elastic lamina in relation to the immunologic mechanism of the injury. Seventeen segments of occluded arteries (femo...
متن کاملHistological Study of the Elastic Artery, Muscular Artery, and Their Junction in Neonate Dog
Introduction: We did this study because there were a few studies about aorto-branch junction. Methods: Four light microscope and electron microscope study, the abdominal aorta, renal artery, and the adjoining right and left renal arteries were dissected out from 4 neonate dogs. Results: Based on the results, there is only one cell type in the tunica intima of endothelium in both art...
متن کاملRupture of the internal elastic lamina and vascular fragility in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.
We studied a possible relation between stroke and an enhanced susceptibility to rupture of the arterial internal elastic lamina by comparing stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats with spontaneously hypertensive rats, which have a very low incidence of stroke. We quantified interruptions in the internal elastic lamina in certain arteries and studied the effect of beta-aminopropionitrile, ...
